Zajil Telecom and Iraqi Informatics & Telecommunication Public Company will create an alternate route for operators to connect the GCC into Europe via Iraq.
Zajil Telecom, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kalaam Telecom Group in Kuwait, has inked a long-term strategic agreement with the Iraqi Informatics & Telecommunication Public Company (ITPC) under the patronage of Her Excellency, Dr. Hiyam Al Yasiri, the Minister of Communications. This landmark agreement paves the way for the establishment of “Kalaam Iraq Transit,” the first official 100% terrestrial alternative route enabling large enterprises, hyperscalers, and global carriers to transmit their data traffic from the GCC to Europe via Iraq, traversing Turkey.
Dr. Hiyam Al Yasiri emphasised that initiatives like this project, along with others underway, will transform Iraq into a secure land corridor, positioning it as a competitor to the sole international maritime corridor in the region, which passes through the Suez Canal.
Kalaam Telecom Group offers a comprehensive range of solutions, leveraging its owned assets such as the 100% terrestrial KNOT cable system and its participation in the EIG consortium’s submarine network. The newly established “Kalaam Iraq Transit” distinguishes itself with its unique route, promising the lowest latency, enhanced resiliency, security, reliability, and overall performance. This innovative route mitigates geopolitical risks and capacity constraints, providing customers with a more efficient and dependable pathway, while expanding connectivity options. Coupled with Zajil’s landing license in Kuwait, in collaboration with CITRA, this initiative bypasses common chokepoints and maintenance issues often faced by other Red Sea cables, ensuring consistent performance and preventing data loss for businesses connecting the GCC to Europe.
Nezar Mohammad Al Saie, Chairman of Kalaam, said: “This strategic investment marks a significant leap in our regional and global market expansion. We’re building Kalaam into a powerhouse, the go-to partner for data and digital solutions. We stay ahead of the curve, making strategic investments, embracing advancements, and navigating geopolitical changes with agility. Our diverse route options empower businesses, operators and hyperscalers to choose the perfect path for seamless connectivity and optimised performance.”
