The classification is aimed at assisting adults in selecting a suitable film for themselves and their children to protect them from exposure to harmful materials.
Saudi Arabia’s General Commission for Audiovisual Media (GCAM) has revealed a mechanism for clearing and categorising cinematic films, according to a report by Saudi Gazette.
As part of the age classification process for cinematic films, GCAM evaluates the appropriateness of audiovisual content for various age groups while ensuring alignment with GCAM’s principles and standards.
A specialised team of experts, well-versed in the film industry, undertakes the age classification and clearance process for cinematic films. This procedure involves multiple stages to meticulously assess the content’s suitability for each age bracket.
The process commences with the receipt of clearance and categorisation requests, followed by the scheduling of review dates, and the subsequent initiation of the categorization process by the dedicated team.
Before final clearance is granted, the team compiles a comprehensive report on the film’s content, complete with age classification and any recommended modifications. These suggestions are then shared with the film’s distributor.
The final steps involve verifying and ensuring the necessary alterations are implemented, culminating in the assignment of the appropriate age classification.
The classification system aims to offer several benefits to the community. Of particular importance is assisting adults in selecting films suitable for themselves and their children, safeguarding them from exposure to inappropriate content.
Furthermore, this classification reinforces the significance of upholding societal values, overarching principles, and content standards in Saudi Arabia in accordance with the prevailing laws.
There are six categories that fall under the age classification of cinematic films. Category G is suitable for all age groups, as its content comes within a positive framework that is free of violence and threats. Most of them are cartoon films.
Content in Category PG rating is safe in general, but it is recommended for adults to watch with children under 12 due to potentially unsettling elements like violence, sadness, or imaginative content.
Content is generally safe in Category PG12 classification, but adults are required to accompany those under 12 as the content may include scenes unsuitable for them, often associated with science fiction, superheroes, or comic book adaptations.
The subjects of films in Category PG15 are suitable for those aged 15 and above, and adults are required to accompany those under 15 years of age and even young people as they may include scenes that are not suitable for them, such as fighting, superheroic acts, science fiction, natural disasters, simple romance as well as warfare in a simple way.
Those under the age of 15 are prohibited from watching films in Category R15 due to mature topics that are treated conservatively and appropriately. These include wars, crime, gangs, romance, horror, and violence.
Films under Category R18 are prohibited for those under 18 years due to more mature topics, such as intensive violence scenes, domestic violence or politics.
