The Minister of Culture and Information Dr. Abdul Aziz Khoja issued a statement that: “Saudi Arabia will shut down satellite television channels that threaten national unity or instigate sedition in society, as reported by al-Watan daily.
National unity is a red line that must not be crossed, he added while stating that the ministry would issue new regulations regarding TV channels that seek to stir racism amongst Saudis. Khoja urged the public to reject such channels as well.
Last March, the ministry shut down a Saudi-owned TV channel after it aired a program that triggered problems among citizens in Najran.
In September 2010, al-Osra channel, owned by Saudi preacher Mohammed al-Habdan was shut down for airing fatwas after the government decided to limit the issuing of fatwas to a number of licensed bodies.
