MAD Solutions is handling the distribution in the Arab World.
The short film Simo, written and directed by Aziz Zoromba, continues to make its mark on the festival circuit. Scheduled to be showcased at the sixth edition of the Sharjah Film Platform, running until December 17, 2023, Simo unfolds a narrative that delves into immigrant immersion in Western society.
Described as “a revealing, simple, but compelling story on immigrant immersion in Western society” by Sabina Dana Plasse from Film Threat, Simo explores the intricate brotherhood between Simo and Emad, fraught with competition and jealousy.
In a bid to assert his popularity and capabilities to his older brother, Simo clandestinely takes control of Emad’s online gaming. However, his actions take a perilous turn that threatens to significantly impact the future of their family.
Having premiered internationally at the Sundance Film Festival and in Europe at the 73rd Berlinale, Simo has garnered numerous accolades, including the Best Canadian Short Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Denis Villeneuve’s Favorite Short at the 19th Prends Ça Court! Gala, and the Canadian Screen Award for Best Live-Action Short.
Prior to its success, Simo received vital support from the Société de Développement des Entreprises Culturelles, the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, CALQ-Government du Quebec, and CAC when it was still in its project phase.
With MAD Solutions handling distribution in the Arab World, the film features a talented ensemble cast, including Basel El-Rayes, Seif El-Rayes, and Aladeen Tawfeek. The film’s cinematography is expertly crafted by Alexandre Nour Desjardins, a nominee for two Canadian Society of Cinematographers Awards.
Aziz Zoromba, the Canadian Egyptian writer and director behind Simo, has established himself as a storyteller exploring themes of cultural identity, assimilation, and intergenerational trauma through his documentaries and feature films.
