Documentary Voices, a non-profit film education initiative along with educational partner International Horizons College, Dubai will host a series of workshop lectures at the Total Arts (Courtyard) Gallery and AM Studio both in Al Quoz from December 7 to 14, 2013.
Building upon the region’s resources and talent, Documentary Voices is committed to engaging the community in filmmaking.
Mahshid Zamani, Founder and Managing Director of Documentary Voices said: “The sixth edition of Documentary Voices based on ‘Children and Cinema’ is poised one of the most stimulating experiences. Having Ross McElwee as our guest of honour provides a great opportunity for all independent filmmakers to learn from a man who has changed the documentary world single-handedly.
“This year, is going to a special one, because we have decided to screen the documentaries made by our workshop participants plus confer an award to the team of the best film made during this intensive week of learning. Many young adults are looking forward to Yemane Demissie’s workshop, where they will learn how to tell their stories through the medium of documentaries. Moreover, Nancy Bishop’s lecture on the International Film Market and how to cast young adults and children is a topic that is very crucial in the first stage of film production, she added.
Yasser Sharaf, Managing Director of Sharaf DG, a supporter of the event, said: “We, at Sharaf DG are proud to be associated with Documentary Voices. Year after year, the screenings are thought-provoking and impactful; and as part of our CSR initiative we extend our full support to them for the education they provide through film analysis and screenings.
Dr. Michael Dobe, President of International Horizons College in Dubai, said: “We are excited that Documentary Voices, has chosen IHC Dubai as its education partner. With the large number of IHC students preparing to further their education in the US, the event organised by Documentary Voices is a fascinating extracurricular activity for our students. The use of film in education is central to our approach to teaching and learning at the College. No modern liberal arts education is complete without an appreciation for the medium of documentary film.”
Dr. Dobe emphasised the practical implications of the Colleges emphasis on film saying: “the technical knowledge and hands-on skills gained through working with film will also be reflected on the students curriculum vitae and give them a competitive advantage in their careers.
