Cobhams wireless camera system has been used in SNG trucks at Sky News Arabia. The equipment, including Cobhams MPEG4 encoder, was originally demonstrated at Sky News in the UK due to its expertise with radio frequency (RF) systems.
This demonstration took place when Sky News Arabia announced they were seeking wireless camera systems, flyaways and trucks. Cobham won the tender to supply six of its HD wireless camera products, with Satcom as the truck provider and the flyaways supplied by SIS LIVE. The two companies entered into a procurement process with Cobham selling two HD systems to Satcom and four HD systems to SIS LIVE, who then integrated the package for Sky News Arabia.
As part of its efforts to further strengthen its position in the Middle East, Cobham has also recently partnered with reseller SNG Broadcast Services in Dubai. The company now has a presence in the UK, Dubai and Cyprus.
Sky News Arabia is our first real sale that is recognisable in the Middle East market. Now is the time to target the Middle East with a proper sales strategy so with the signing of SNG, we hope we can take that forward, commented JP Delport, broadcast sales manager at Cobham.
SNG owns satellites and an antenna farm, and has been providing services to Al Jazeera and various broadcasters across the Middle East. SNG now has a product sales division in Dubai that will aid Cobham with the sales of their systems around the whole region, including the emirate.
Cobhams digital HD wireless camera systems were also used extensively at the recent Olympic Games with around 40 HD systems featured, says Delport.
The company will be at IBC2012 with two new products including the latest version of its Solo H. 264 wireless camera system, featuring the ultra mobile video link (UMVL) communications protocol for highly stable, very low latency transmission, and MediaMesh, which uses wireless technology to enable a journalist in the field for live broadcast.
These products are fairly unique to the industry so theyre now gaining momentum. MediaMesh, for instance, which is more down the IP route and KA satellite interfaces which will be exciting for the industry, Delport added.
