The Sky News Arabia Programme (SNAP) is conducting a series of journalism workshops for UAE university students to foster talent for the local media industry. Now, in its second year, the workshops are run by SNAP in conjunction with UAE-based universities to provide students and recent graduates with hands-on training and experience to develop their technical and journalistic skills.
Spread over a period of three weeks, the training covers a range of technical and editorial themes through a series of workshops run by experienced Sky News Arabia staff. Thirteen students from five universities are enrolled in this years programme. They will learn about a range of topics such as the TV news business in the 21st century and the art of presenting news, anchoring talk shows, ethical conduct for journalists, preparing and producing television programmes and carrying out investigative journalism.
The participating universities include Zayed University, UAE University, Higher College of Technology (Girls), Higher College of Technology (Boys) and Suffolk University in Boston. The top performers among the group will be selected for an internship at Sky News Arabia this summer with the chance to compete for a full-time role at the station.
SNAP was first introduced by Sky News Arabia in the spring of 2012 with fourteen students taking part in the workshops. Five of the 14 were selected for an internship that saw them gain hands-on experience by working side-by-side with Sky News Arabias newsroom staff. Two of the five were subsequently hired for full-time positions as video editor and the first female Emirati camera operator.
