Harris Broadcast Communications has received an order for a DVB-T2 UHF TV transmission solution from Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), the State Television Network in Sri Lanka, following the governments decision to standardise on DVB-T2 for its migration from analogue to digital broadcasting. This order represents the first DVB-T2 transmitter sale in South Asia by any TV transmitter vendor.
The Harris DVB-T2 solution for SLRC will include multiple Harris Maxiv ULX UHF transmitters to support eight over-the-air digital channels, and allow the national broadcaster to retain local flavor through targeted DVB-T2 channel insertions in specific regions.
DVB-T2 enables broadcasters to deliver more over-the-air DTV and HDTV channels than DVB-T, offering a 30-to-50% increase in spectrum-use efficiency. DVB-T2 also supports the transmission of digital applications, from electronic programme guides and video-on-demand services (such as “Push VoD”) to a variety of rich media applications. This includes interactive opportunities when the television or mobile device is coupled with an internet connection.
“The Harris DVB-T2 platform will provide SLRC with a complete and simple solution to implement their digital TV services in the short term without the need for an immense investment in resources,” said Said Bacho, vice president, sales and service, Middle East and South Asia, Harris Broadcast Communications. “The operational benefits of DVB-T2 broadcasting and Harris PowerSmart technology for green, high-density transmission operations will deliver a real return on investment and an overall lower total cost of ownership for SLRC.”
SLRC will realise further operational efficiencies through highly-efficient Harris PowerSmart technology, which enables the broadcast industrys most cost-, energy- and space-efficient transmission solutions. Harris PowerSmart technology is the backbone of all Harris Maxiva UHF transmitters, as well as other Harris DTV and radio broadcast transmitters.
Bacho continues, “With the introduction of DVB-T2 broadcasting in Sri Lanka, Harris transmitters will enable SLRC to deliver more services at better quality than would have be possible with their existing analogue transmission infrastructure. The complete digital energy-efficient Harris solution with its compact video head-end and digital transmitters will allow us to quickly get on air with our DVB-T2 broadcast services.”
SLRC broadcasts informative, educational and family-orientated entertainment from its studio complex in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The corporation transmits its programming in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages.
