Contrary to information issued by MBC Group, there was apparently no fire at the broadcasters headquarters in Dubai, sources close to the free-to-air network told BroadcastPro Middle East.
A fault in the switch gear caused one of the transformers to trip creating a power cut, which immediately powered on the generator and the emergency lights in the building. One of the emergency lights was faulty and began to smoke, the source said.
The smoke set off the fire alarm and brought the civil defence team to MBCs doorstep and people were evacuated from the building as a safety precaution.
Essentially, it was just of a faulty component but gave MBC the opportunity to run through its fire drill, disaster recovery procedures and so on, the source said.
Almost three years ago, when MBC lost its main transformer, it had invested in additional generators and a robust disaster recovery process that had helped pay TV network OSN recover from the fire at its premises a few months ago.
The present situation provided the ideal opportunity for the free-to-air network to once again test its DR procedures and ensure that secure measures were in place, should a disaster strike.
