The figure is up from 928m in February and could be attributed to the stay-at-home model in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that is forcing people to self-isolate.
Amazon-owned platform Twitch saw 1.1bn hours of content being streamed in March, an increase from the previous month of 20% and the highest peak since the streaming platform launched in 2011, according to live-streaming services provider StreamElements and its analytics partner Arsenal.gg.
Commenting on the figure, Doron Nir, Chief Executive Officer of StreamElements, said: “While this 20% growth has gotten a huge boost by stay-at-home mandates, now that more viewers and creators are discovering the power and appeal of live social video, we expect the medium to maintain some of this new momentum beyond the current crisis.”
Twitch has amassed a huge following where gamers congregate to watch others play video games like Fortnight or League of Legends, as well as broadcasts of esports competitions.
