The film is centred around the Buzz Lightyear action figure character from the 'Toy Story' franchise.
Disney-Pixar’s animated movie Lightyear will not release in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.
In a statement, the UAE’s Media Regulatory Office said it was not licensed to be shown.
“The Media Regulatory Office announced that the animated film Lightyear, which is scheduled for release on 16th June, is not licensed for public screening in all cinemas in the UAE, due to its violation of the country’s media content standards,” it said in a social media post.
“The office confirms that all films screened in cinemas across the country are subject to follow-up and evaluation before the date of screening to the public, to ensure the safety of the circulated content according to the appropriate age classification.”
The animated film, scheduled for worldwide release on June 16, features a scene involving a same-sex kiss between characters.
The film features Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz and Uzo Aduba as Alisha Hawthorne. Aduba’s character is in a relationship with another woman, whom she kisses in the film.
The new film is a spin-off of the Toy Story series exploring the origin story of the Buzz Lightyear character.
