Following in the footsteps of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, YouTube has announced plans to launch a new slate of ad-supported original programming soon. The shows, which will be free to view are expected to secure a place for the video site in the premium programming bracket. The new programmes are not a part of YouTube’s Red subscription service.
In the process, YouTube hopes it will attract premium advertising as well.
Kevin Hart and Ellen Degeneres are early partners for generating original videos. Katy Perry and Demi Lovato also announced new behind-the-scenes shows with YouTube, while TV and radio personality Ryan Seacrest is confirmed to be producing a music competition to debut on the site later this year. YouTube will also rope in online talent for original videos.
In the meantime, YouTube is reported to invest hundreds of millions of dollars over the next year to produce more than 40 new original shows and further build its YouTube Red service.
