Luke Hyams the online platforms head of originals for Europe, Middle East and Africa has stated that YouTube is aiming to bring more original content and more premium-subscription by identifying more character-centered dramas with more international potential and comedies that depart from the usual sitcom template.
His comments come as YouTube tries to promote its YouTube Premium subscription service (formerly YouTube Red).
Elaborating on the content he is looking for, Hyams said: In scripted, were looking for personality-driven, authored pieces that have potential for international appeal and that take us into a new world or environment that maybe we havent seen in a drama before.Focusing on one persons narrative works really well for us.
Commenting on comedy-centred content, Hyams said he was looking out to more serialised half-hours than your usual sitcoms.
While stressing that the move was not meant to take popular YouTubers on the free service and moving them behind a paywall, YouTube would work with big-name talent such as Dunst and also Robert Downey, Jr., who is working with YouTube on a documentary series on artificial intelligence, said Hyams.
Elaborating on YouTube Premium subscription service where Netflix and Amazon are ahead with original productions, he said YouTube already boasts a vast array of free content and only needs to convince viewers to switch to its premium service.
Hyams said he was seeking content able to make a social impact, including female-led stuff.
