Akamai Technologies plans to demonstrate its portfolio of over-the-top (OTT) video workflow and delivery solutions at IBC 2016. New capabilities on display at Akamai’s IBC stand 5.B49 are designed to further improve live, linear and on-demand online video at 4K quality through improved performance and faster delivery at broadcast-level scale.
Akamai’s workflow enhancements begin with a focus on the speed and reliability of transporting video from its origination point onto the Akamai Platform. Akamai’s Ingest Acceleration technology is designed to improve the throughput and consistency of live streams between encoders and ingest points while also helping to mitigate the complexities of ingesting content over the open Internet.
To ensure the perpetual connection to the Akamai Platform that is critical for delivering uninterrupted video, Akamai is leveraging its Dynamic Encode to Entry-point Mapping (DEEM). Thanks to the scale of the Akamai Platform, entry points can be located close to encoders in order to minimise transit issues. DEEM also incorporates multiple levels of resiliency to help ensure that viewers are not impacted even in the case of transit degradation.
Addressing the high-profile challenge of live streams lagging behind broadcast signals, Akamai intends to show sub 10-second Low Latency video delivery enabled by its Media Acceleration technology for live and on-demand streaming. The company will stream live 4K video across the public Internet directly to its IBC stand, demonstrating the high level of performance necessary to keep online viewers in sync with broadcast viewers.
Akamai will also demonstrate its Ingest Monitoring and Reporting capabilities. These tools help deliver critical, real-time insights and telemetry into the state and performance of live streams.
For the first time in Europe, Akamai will demonstrate a production model of its new Broadcast Operations Control Center (BOCC) and services at IBC, showing support of a live 4K workflow from video capture to playback. Designed to help ensure the reliability of OTT services, the facility combines specialised technical staff with monitoring, analytics, reporting, quality and availability measurement tools. The unique offering provides 24/7/365 support and operational insight for delivery of live, linear and on-demand video.
