Blackmagic Design has announced UltraStudio 4K Mini, a new capture and playback solution for Thunderbolt 3 computers with 12G-SDI, HDMI, analogue video and audio connections that allows customers to build solutions for editing, colour grading, live broadcast graphics, archiving from traditional broadcast decks and live internet streaming.
With the UltraStudio 4K Mini, customers can connect Thunderbolt 3 computers to any kind of video equipment for building edit workstations, archiving from old broadcast decks, outputting broadcast graphics and even live streaming.
UltraStudio is designed to work with video software on Mac, Windows and Linux such as DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and more.

Customers get broadcast quality in 8 and 10-bit dynamic range capture in all formats up to 4K DCI at 60p and 12-bit high dynamic range capture in all formats up to 4K DCI at 30p.
UltraStudio 4K Mini features USB for connecting a keyboard and mouse, plus it will trickle charge their laptop computer when connected to the Thunderbolt 3 port. There’s even a built-in SD card reader allowing instant access to their camera media cards.
UltraStudio promises broadcast and digital cinema-quality capture and playback that can be used for any workflow.
UltraStudio is designed for editing, colour and visual effects to live capture and on-set monitoring during production.
There are even models with 12G-SDI and support for the latest HDR formats to ensure colourists get everything they need for monitoring to broadcast displays, HDR televisions or the latest digital cinema projectors.
All UltraStudio models include SDI in and out, HDMI out for monitoring on TVs and projectors and analogue YUV/NTSC/PAL video and balanced analogue input for archiving from legacy analogue broadcast tape decks.
The UltraStudio 4K Mini and Extreme models add an extra HDMI input plus balanced analogue audio out for connecting to in-studio audio monitoring.
Built on Thunderbolt 3 technology, UltraStudio uses a single cable connection to any computer that has the bandwidth to handle the hi-res video formats.
Thunderbolt promises low latency and accurate time synchronisation for high-quality capture and playback. UltraStudio 4K models also include an AC power connection, tailor-made for working in studios.
