Regional filmmakers and production house representatives, among others, got their first look at Sony’s Venice CineAlta full frame 6K sensor motion picture camera on March 15 2018. Organised by Sony Professionals MEA, An evening with Venice at Dubai Production City offered a screening of the well-received short film titled The Dig, a showcase of anamorphic Venice footage, along with the camera.
Presented at IBC, Sonys new flagship camera is a full-frame cinema camera with a 36mm x 24mm sensor and an integrated eight-step mechanical glass ND system. Sources at Sony would not commit to a retail price for the camera stating that the modular design can be customised depending on the customers needs, such as viewfinders and external recorders that can be added as required. The compelling short film The Dig shot with the Venice, that attendees at the Dubai event watched, was a showcase to the 15 stops of latitude that Venice has, to help calibrate the camera under conditions from searing sunlight to almost no light, among other features.
Speaking at IBC to American Cinematographer, the Sony team that designed the Venice described the process: We gathered a lot of feedback from owners and users of the F65 and F55. We also spoke to directors of photography, camera assistants, DITs, colourists and others to find out what they wanted in a camera.
One big request was a larger sensor size. There is a lot of movement in the market towards full frame. Another request was to achieve a correct area for anamorphic with a 6-by-5 format. The F55 has a 17-by-9 sensor that doesnt fit anamorphic. We wanted to offer the best quality anamorphic.
Highlighting the challenges of bringing such a camera to the market, Aydin Tolan, Head of Broadcast at Sony Professional Solutions MEA, speaking to BroadcastPro ME said: Understanding the requirements and needs of the market and match making with the existing technology is key. At Sony, we pride ourselves on being solutions providers. The fully modular and intuitive design with its refined functionality supports simple and efficient on-location operation.
The camera began shipping in February 2018.
