Two new firmware updates will include additional recording modes, support for live event production and more improvements, which will be released over the next year.
Sony Middle East and Africa has announced the next two firmware updates for the Burano, the latest addition to the CineAlta family of digital cinema cameras. The updates, Burano Version 1.1 and Version 2.0, are set to be released over the next year and will include additional recording formats, new de-squeeze options, monitoring updates, and other features requested by the cinematic community.
Scheduled for release in late June 2024, Burano Version 1.1 will introduce several new features designed for live event production and enhance support for anamorphic lenses with a 1.5x de-squeeze display. This update will also add S700 Protocol over Ethernet, enabling remote control of the Burano camera using a Remote Control Panel (RCP). Controllable settings include exposure, white balance, and paint adjustments, depending on the RCP model. Additionally, Version 1.1 will support Multi Matrix Area Indication, allowing users to adjust targeted colours during Multi Matrix operation.
The Version 1.1 update will also support Sony’s Monitor & Control app version 2.0.0, which introduces in-demand features such as Multi-Camera Monitoring for iPadOS, allowing feeds from up to four cameras. It also includes precise exposure monitoring tools like waveform, histogram, false colour, and zebra, as well as intuitive focus control and frequently used functions’ control similar to Sony’s CineAlta cameras. The Monitor & Control app is available for free on iOS and Android devices.
Planned for release in March 2025 or later, Burano Version 2.0 will incorporate numerous new features and improvements based on user feedback. This update will add new recording formats, including a 3.8K Full Frame crop mode capable of shooting up to 120 fps. Other additions include a 24.00 fps option for X-OCN 16:9 imager modes and various high frame rate (S&Q) modes ranging from 66 to 110 fps.
Version 2.0 will also introduce a 1.8x de-squeeze setting and several monitoring improvements, such as standardised SDI video output for X-OCN and XAVC, an improved on-screen display, and View Finder Gamma Display Assist for S-Log3 monitoring. Enhanced exposure tools derived from the flagship VENICE camera system will be included, along with expanded white balance memory presets from three to eight and support for Active/High Image Stabilisation in Full-Frame 6K and Super 35 1.9K 16:9 imager modes.
Additionally, Version 2.0 will add breathing compensation and image stabilization metadata in X-OCN.
The new Burano Firmware Versions 1.1 and 2.0 will be available in selected countries in the Middle East and Africa from late June 2024 and from March 2025 or later, respectively. Filmmakers can easily download the updates directly to their cameras using a PC.
